SOUND OFF SUNDAYS – WEEK SIX
Track: “Use Me Up” Artist: CID featuring Anabel Englund
My first introduction to the real world came at eighteen, when a country boy from Virginia suddenly found himself stationed in Uijeongbu, South Korea. That experience cracked my entire sonic universe open. Up to that point, my ears lived on R&B, Soul, and Rap — but overseas, everything changed.
I spent more nights than I can count inside Noise Basement, NB2, tucked away in the Hongdae District. What happened in those rooms stays in those rooms, but let’s just say there may or may not have been a shirtless worm across a stage with a complete stranger. I’ll never tell.
The point is simple: dance music isn’t foreign to me. After partying across a few corners of the world, that rhythm has found a home inside me. Which brings me to this week’s Sound Off Sundays selection — a record from New York’s CIDand California’s Anabel Englund, an artist who’s been one of my personal favorites for years. If you need a reason why, start with her debut album Messing with Magic.
Their track “Use Me Up” hits all the right marks. The beat moves, the vocals glide, and the vibe feels effortless. Smooth, hypnotic, and a little dangerous in the best way. It even raises a question I’ve asked myself before:
Is it really being “used” if you’re fully aware…and okay with it?
Released in 2018, the record still feels fresh, and I’d love to see CID and Englund link up again. They caught something special here.
And somewhere in the background, you can still feel Bill Withers’ influence — proof that timeless writing never fades.
Take a listen.
