SOUND OFF SUNDAYS – WEEK FIVE
Track: “Cuban Links” Artist: Rod Wave featuring Kevin Gates
For most people, it was Rod Wave’s breakout single “Heart On Ice” that made them pay attention. That was the moment he became a household name. But for me, the first time I heard “Cuban Links,” I knew I had found an artist worth following. Rod Wave blends rap with something more profound — a church-born vocal delivery that turns pain into melody. He says the things most men are afraid to admit out loud, and it’s that vulnerability that draws you in.
“Cuban Links” resonates with me because drive, passion, and ambition often create distance. The more focused you become, the more people misunderstand you — especially when your vision is still just an idea. When Rod sings, “Wake up in the morning, hit my knees and I pray, because He finally made a way,” it doesn’t feel like a bar. It feels like testimony. You can hear the gratitude in his voice because he wasn’t always living with abundance. The entire first verse serves as a reminder that he had to fight for every inch of progress, and the chain becomes more than just jewelry — it becomes a symbol of perseverance.
Featuring Kevin Gates was the perfect choice. Gates delivers one of the most honest lines in the record: “You on and fall off, you find out who really love you.” That bar is simple yet heavy, and it’s something I personally relate to. Success exposes loyalty. Setbacks expose the truth. “Cuban Links” isn’t just a record for me. It’s a badge. An anthem. A reminder that when you’ve earned something the hard way, nobody can take it off your neck.
