Your Guide to 2026 Non-Resident Big Game Application Dates

Updated: Apr 3

As the new year approaches, non-resident hunters shift their focus. We move from the previous season to application deadlines, unit research, and early e-scouting for the fall ahead. For elk, mule deer, and whitetail deer, many Western states open or close non-resident application windows between January and June. This requires early organization and clear planning.

Key Application Dates for Non-Residents

Idaho

Idaho’s first non-resident application period for general elk and deer tags is complete, having closed in mid-December 2025. Applicants should now monitor draw results and purchase deadlines. It's also a good time to evaluate eligibility for second-draw and leftover opportunities later in the year.

Arizona

Arizona applications are currently open. This state represents one of the earliest annual entry points for non-resident hunters.

  • Elk (and pronghorn) application deadline: February 10, 2026

  • Deer (mule deer and whitetail) application deadline: Early June 2026

New Mexico

New Mexico operates a single big-game draw for all species. They do not use preference or bonus points.

  • Application window: Mid-January through March 19, 2026 (5:00 p.m. MT)

  • Species: Elk, mule deer, whitetail deer

Wyoming

Wyoming requires early commitment for non-resident elk applicants. Deer applications remain open longer.

  • Non-resident elk application window: January 13 – February 2, 2026

  • Non-resident deer (mule deer and whitetail): Application window extends into late spring
